Spalted Beech Side Tables

Handmade using timber from a large Beech tree limb (approx. 300 years old) that failed and fell into a garden in the grounds of a stately home in the Cotswolds, at the beginning of March 2020.

A colleague and I were called to out to clear the site up asap, so that a tractor could pull the timber out and work could be done to the rest of the tree. I hadn’t yet officially begun 12Tree [one-two-tree] when I decided to keep a few of these cookies to make some small tables out of. They were barn-dried for just over a year, and unfortunately half of the disks I had kept were too spalted to work on - I wish I had kept more!

These luxurious side tables feature oak bowtie inlays (that flaunt some stunning medullary rays) to stabilise natural cracks that occur during the drying process. Smaller cracks have been filled with a contrasting premium black wood filler, that is non-acrylic and water-based, instead of using an epoxy resin.

Sanded down to a fine grit, these side tables are finished with Osmo Polyx, a natural hardwax-oil for a smooth and highly durable finish. The legs are made from brass-coated carbon steel, which are are handmade in Wiltshire by thehairpinlegco, and are fitted with professional 1” stainless steel screws for superior strength.

Avg. Diameter: 41cm x H: 46cm / 1.5” thick / 7kg
