Spalted Beech Stump Table

Handmade from a spalted beech stump that was cut in 2018 by a restored vintage petrol drag saw. Features two oak inlays, which flaunt some stunning medullary rays, to stabilise natural cracks that occurred during the drying process.

This extraordinary piece comes with some charming local history - the timber used was cut by a rare 1920s ‘Witte Log & Tree Saw’ that was originally made in the U.S.A for Canadian Importers Ltd in Avonmouth, Bristol. After parts of the machine were found buried in a garden in Minchhampton in 2017, the machine was carefully restored using virtually all of the original parts to maintain its age and character!

Sanded down to a fine grit, it has had multiple coats of Osmo Polyx, a natural hardwax-oil that provides a smooth and highly durable finish. The legs are made from powder-coated carbon steel, which are are handmade in Wiltshire by thehairpinlegco, and are fitted with professional 1” stainless steel screws for strength.
